Thilawsu

Thilawsu is Thailand's tallest waterfall, and supposedly its most beautiful as well. While this water fall was impressive, I have been more impressed with waterfalls like the modest sized Phacharoen Waterfall. That day we also visited an other Karen village (our driver had to drop of some supplies), which lay across a vary scary rickety... Continue Reading →

To Um Phang we go!

We are off to Um Phang, where we plan to get some inner-tubes and float down the river for a few days. The plan is to reach a small town on the river bank and take Sawngthaew (a pickup with 2 benches in the back) back to Um Phang. We still have no clue on... Continue Reading →

Over the bridge

Yesterday we walked over the Thai-Myanmar (Burma) Friendship bridge, over the Mae Moei river into Myawadi, Myanmar. Life on the Myanmar side of the river is very different from life in Thailand, the men all wear Longii (men's sarongs), and the women balance large heavy objects on their heads, and the main road is barely... nanananananan BATMAN!!!

OK OK I lied I did not see batman, but I did see hundreds of thousand BATS! at Tham Chao Lam it was one of the most amazing sights I have ever seen. There were just so many of them... can you imaging how many insects they devour every night? There were also about 10... Continue Reading →

Ecology Power

We rented motorbikes the other day, but I felt confident that we were not contributing to global climate change... why you ask? Because our bike had ecology power! Harnessing the power of ecosystems, sure makes one feel all tingly inside.

Wat Thwet

Most people come to Sukhothai to see the incredible ruins, but there are some very unique modern wats that are worth a visit. Wat Thwet was restored by a monk roughly 20 years ago. He fashioned many sculptures around the wat to depict many stories from Buddhist mythology, and images from a dream he had.... Continue Reading →

Sukhothai in ruins

Sukhothai was amazing; it is a UN world heritage site, its main attraction are the many ruins from Thailand's first capital. these ruins are huge and there are offerings (usually flowers everywhere) This was the biggest Buddha in the park over 15 meters tall! Buddhas don't come any bigger than this. even the gas stations... Continue Reading →

Khao Mao Khao Fang

This was an amazing restaurant. The whole place was designed by a botanist and is filled with plants from around northern Thailand, and is set up to make it seem like you are actually in the middle of the jungle (think the Rainforest cafe, but real and not tacky!) To make it more convincing there... Continue Reading →

Happy New Year!

Happy New Year from Thailand!!! A very tired waitress at the Crocodile tear We spent the New year in Mae Sot; there really was not much going on (except for karaoke from EVERY house early in the evening), so we went to the local farang pub 'The Crocodile tear' and listened to some surprisingly good... Phacharoen Waterfall

After the gibbon sanctuary we visited Phacharoen Waterfall. This is an amazing step waterfall made up of over 90 smaller water falls. This is the best water fall we have seen in Thailand, although in a few days we will head to Um Phang where we will gaze upon Thailand's largest and supposedly most beautiful... Continue Reading →

How many monkey butlers?

NONE! These are Gibbons, which are apes NOT monkeys. The Gibbon sanctuary is about 40 KMs from Mae Sot and houses Gibbons which have been rescued from captivity and can not be returned to the wild (many of them have amputated limbs). The sounds they make are incredibly loud. whoop! whoop! whoop! over and over... Continue Reading →

Mae Sot

I expected Mae Sot to be a small border town, but it is actually a city about the size of Chiang Mai. It is not the most exiting place in Thailand, but the Municipal market is quite interesting. It is an assault on your senses (especially your sense of smell) as you see all sorts... Continue Reading →

A meal fit for a king

Warning gruesome pictures below! Squeamish people and vegetarians should probably skip this post The last night on our trek Adul (our guide) bought a pig for dinner. We watched (by choice) how they slaughtered the pig, and how they butchered the meat and the organs to make some delicious food. This pig died of natural... Continue Reading →

Jumanji!

We made it! Our 4 days in the jungle were quite an experience, but we survived to tell the tale. After a short ride in the back of a pickup truck we arrived at Mae Sam Lam, a small Town on the Salween river, from there we took a 3 hour boat ride deep into... Continue Reading →

Into the wilds

Tomorrow morning we go on a 4 day trek into the jungles on the boarder between Thailand and Myanmar (Burma). Our Guide from the Karen hill tribe, and has many Friends in the KNU (the Karen Army... they are fighting for an independent state in Myanmar) so we may get to visit some of their... I got caves on my mind

It's all I can think of. Today we went to Tham Keaw Komol (Calcite Cave), and while the formations were astounding, and better than anything else I have seen so far (the number 2 cave in asia I have been told... must find number 1) there was no sense of adventure, no challenges to overcome,... Mae Sariang

We are now in Mae Sariang... it is a small town and there ain't to much to do. We plan on going on a 3 or 4 day trek from here, and maybe do some camping in a nearby national park. that's it... for now... maybe

Mae Hong Son Winter Festival

The Mae Hong Son winter festival had all the usual Thai festival fair, but the coolest thing about it was the hundreds of lantern that light us the sky. These lanterns rise into the night sky by the hundreds... some of them even have fireworks attached to them.

Mae Aw

After Tham Pla we headed for the Myanmar border, to a town called Mae Aw. This Town is full of old Chinese KMT fighters who settled here a few years back. A small dirt road lead us from the town to the Myanmar boarder, where a lone Thai guard stood watch... half asleep The border... Continue Reading →

Tham Pla

A few day ago we rented motorbikes and went to Tham Pla (fish cave... sounds Klingon doesn't it?), although it really is not much of a cave, but there are 1 meter long fish that you can feed! But what kind of fish are they? oh i see that makes everything perfectly clear... that's almost... Continue Reading →

Mae Hong Son

We are now in Mae Hong Son (the capital of Mae Hong Son province). It is a small town, and there isn't much to see or do so we should be on our way to Mae Sariang in a few days.

Cave Fish

On our last day in Ban Tham Lod we went to a cave to see some cave specialized fish. There are two endemic species of cave fish in the area, one that lives in this cave, and one that lives in cave waterfalls (or at least attached to the rocks in cave waterfalls) in a... Continue Reading →

Sappong Winter Festival

We went to the Sappong winter festival a few nights ago. Ferris wheels are always fun right? maybe not when the cages seats are designed for small Thai children, not full grown farang the highlight of the fair was the Muay Thai (Thai kick boxing)
