Rio+20

Is anyone here interested/hopeful in RIO+20?

Personally after watching year after year of UNFCCC meetings agree to do something about GHG emissions… at some unspecified point in the future, I have little hope that Rio+20 will produce anything useful. Though I’d love to be proven wrong.

  1. I’d note that Greenpeace is effectively abandoning the UN process and international agreements in favor of “civil disobedience””:

“Indeed, the Sydney Morning Herald yesterday quoted Greenpeace saying they are looking at giving up on international negotiations and moving to a campaign of civil disobedience.”

    And:

“Rio has turned into an epic failure. It has failed on equity, failed on ecology and failed on economy,” said Kumi Naidoo, executive director of Greenpeace International. He said Greenpeace would give up on negotiations and move to a campaign of civil disobedience.

We are living in “interesting times”.

    1. Unfortunately I am not sure civil disobedience will achieving much more. See this.

In case you can’t tell I am just a little bit depressed by our inability to make progress. But like I said I desperately want to be proven wrong

  2. It’s better than nothing; extensive press coverage puts the issues in the public eye.

On the other hand it does seem to have become something like Good Friday; operationally lapsed churchgoers get religion for a day or two, emotions run unchecked as they go through the ritual, then it’s back to sin and BAU.
