I use my 70-200 2.8 lens. It lets me get reasonably close, but what I like about it is that when I shoot wide open the depth of field is very short so the background is nicely blurred and non-distracting.
Actually the sliversword picture (the second last one) was taken with a 17-35 lens. I lets me get even closer but makes the backgrounds more distracting (less blurred)
