I would think that the failure lies more in the consumer’s ability to discern truth from fiction, regardless of the medium…
That is a failure, but I think that is to be expected. People simply cannot be expected to know enough on all subjects, to be able to identify those who peddle in BS. Better education can help reduce this problem, but not eliminate it.
But the media doesn’t have that excuse. If they are going to report on a story they should have enough knowledge of the topic at hand to properly determine who are the relevant experts.
Oh and just to be clear, when I refer to the media I am referring to all mediums (TV, newspapers, radio and the internet).
