The Nobel Peace Prize and sour grapes

First of all Al Gore and the IPCC deserve sincere congratulations for winning the Nobel Peace prize. The IPCC has greatly advanced the scientific knowledge of climate change and its effects on the world, while Al Gore has increased awareness and made the science accessible to everyone. We should all be grateful for their efforts.

But we are not. The small, but very vocal, minority of pundits and politicians that have denied the existence of, or our contribution to climate change are now predictably trashing Al Gore, the IPCC and the whole Nobel Peace prize.

To top off this whole charade when one of the talking heads claims that the earth may not actually be warming, the other two jokers on the show correct him by saying the earth IS warming but the question is whats causing it. That is simply not true. The IPCC stated very clearly that the earth is warming AND we are causing it.

If the Fox news clip wasn’t enough, the National Joke Post takes it one step further, by belittling past prize winners like Mother Teresa, nuclear disarmament, land mine activists, peace negotiators, the UN High Commissioner for Refugees, and the UN Children’s Fund. I can understand criticizing past prize winners like Yasser Arafat, but how does a respectable newspaper trash UNICEF, and the other worthwhile recipients of the prize.

To make matters worse the National Post then claims that An Inconvenient Truth, deserved a Nobel for science fiction rather than peace; Fox News implied the same thing. This is taking the recent judgement by a UK judge who found small insignificant inaccuracies completely out of context; the judge ruled that Gore’s film was “substantially founded upon scientific research and fact“. Fiction indeed!

This spectacle over Gore, the IPCC and the Nobel peace prize shows how many sour grapes the deniers still have. Next time they should follow the science instead of going against it. Then they wont look so foolish.

You make it seem like this is a new thing. The politically liberal Nobel committee has been handing out their self-induldent and meaningless peace prizes to self-aggrandizing posers and lazy do-nothings for years now, and anybody with more than half an ounce of horse-sense in them ignores the awards entirely.
