Sharks… Let’s go swimming

It’s been a while since I last posted, and in my last post I mentioned going to Shark Island… how many of you though I was shark food?

The good news is that there are no sharks in shark Island, it is just a name (I told you), the better news is that we did not go to shark island, but rather we went to shark bay… and there are plenty of sharks there.

We actually went there twice, the first day was quite stormy (we had to kayak through 3 meter swells just to get there), and the visibility was crappy. It was like swimming in pea soup. I was scared… I did not like the idea of swimming in 3 meeter swells… a few hundred meters from shore… in shark infested waters… with almost no visibility.

Eventually I went in… and saw nothing.

A few days later, with much calmer weather we decided to try our luck again. We kayaked to shark bay, and jumped in the water. After about 1/2 hour we finally saw the sharks; they were Black Tip Reef Sharks (Carcharhinus melanopterus), and while I thought I would be scared, I was not. In fact I kept diving below the surface trying to get as close as possible, but the sharks proved to be far to agile, and would effortlessly swim away.

It was an exhilarating experience, sharks are such majestic graceful swimmers, that command respect. I hope I can one day repeat this experience.

Sorry no pictures, I don’t have an underwater camera… yet

  1. “In that case I sentence you to a lifetime of horror on Monster Island.”

[to Lisa]: “Don’t worry, it’s just a name.”
[Lisa and others are chased by fire-breathing monsters]
Lisa: He said it was just a name!
Man: What he meant is that Monster Island is actually a peninsula.
