Long-term trends vs cold snaps

If It’s That Warm, How Come It’s So Damned Cold?
No we are not cooling, nor are we entering into a mini-ice age!
Here we go again, for another round of misrepresenting Mojib Latif’s work showing a levelling off of temperature followed by rapid warming. This time it was kicked off by the cold spell over parts of Europe and North America. But it is worth noting that the Arctic is much warmer than usual, and it is rather warm here in Vancouver as well, so much so that there are worries about there being a snow shortage for the upcoming Winter Olympics.

Take a look at the above graph, what do you see? Does it look like a cooling trend? Nope, but according to the crack reporters (or is that reporters on crack?) over at the Daily Mail it certainly does show cooling. 30 years of cooling, perhaps even a mini-ice age!
2000-2009 is the hottest decade on record: WMO, NOAA
Both NOAA and the WMO have said that 2000-2009 is the hottest decade on record (actually they said ‘will be’ since the decade is quite over yet, but it would take a truly extraordinarily cold December to change anything). the 2000s was warmer than the 1990s which in turn beat, beat out the 1980s.
Lying “Friends of Science” are no friends of mine
Looks like the ironically named Friends of Science are back with some radio ads. Only problem is they lie. Lie, lie, lie.
They make three claims that are easily debunked.
- It hasn’t warmed for the past 10 years.
- That global warming is caused by the sun.
- That scientists politicians and celebrities refuse to debate.
Lets take them on one at a time.
Yes there exists a scientific consensus on global warming, and no we are not experiencing cooling of any sort
As difficult as it may seem there are still people who deny that an overwhelming consensus exists within the scientific community. Given this, and given the climate bill making its way through the senate, 16 scientific societies located in the US have re-affirmed that a scientific consensus exists and that climate change posed significant problems to the US if left unchecked, in an open letter to US senators.
‘Watts up with Watts?’ copyright complain invalid
Anthony Watts’ teachable moment has fully backfired; Youtube has accepted Peter Sinclair’s DMCA counter-notice and put-back request, and restored the Climate Change Denier Crock of the Week video titled Watts up with Watts?
Why are deniers afraid of debate? [UPDATED]

Recently Peter Sinclair Posted a video (which I linked to in my sidebar) titled " What is up with Watts?” as part of his excellent “Climate Denier Crock of the Week” series. In it he debunkes (again) the notion that the increase surface temperature record is due to the heat Island effect. That video has since been pulled from YouTube by a (likely fraudulent) DMCA takedown request.
Note to George Will: Using a creationist as your scientific authority is a bad idea
George Will is at it again. Thankfully this time he steers mostly away from argument’s requiring facts to back him up, preferring instead to argue that since China wont commit to firm GHG emissions reductions we should do anything. Despite the fact that such arguments only really make sense if your refuse to accept global warming, they don’t require blatant falsifications.
But given the subject matter you know George wouldn’t go an entire column without making a serious factual blunder:
The folly of extrapolating from short term trends
Climate change deniers routinely make the same mistake as the comic above.
Ice age called off
Everyone can breath a sigh of relief. The upcoming ice age that was predicted by deniers has been called off. The cause of this ice age was a lack of sunspots and a diminished solar output. But:
